For Chowhounds: Iced Pup-kin Spice Latte

For Fall, dogs can enjoy pumpkin with or without the spice. Here’s our variation of this holiday favorite in a dog-friendly frozen treat.

Ingredients:

  • 1 15oz can pumpkin puree (or fresh oven-roasted pumpkin, which are plentiful this time of year!)

  • ⅛-¼ tsp ground cinnamon* (optional, depending on your dog’s taste)

  • ½ cup plain greek yogurt (whole milk yogurt is best, but low fat can be used in dogs with fat sensitivities or a history of pancreatitis)

Directions:

  1. Mix cinnamon well with pumpkin puree. Add greek yogurt to the mixture with option to mix well, or to partly combine the mixture. You can be creative with the “latte art” by only partially mixing the pumpkin/cinnamon mixture with the greek yogurt to create orange and white swirls in the finished treat product!

  2. Choose freezer safe, pet friendly containers that are appropriately sized for your dog

  3. Dole out the mixture into the containers, making sure to account for expansion in the freezer if using a capped container.

  4. Freeze until solid.

  5. Let your dog enjoy Thanksgiving on-demand and on tap. We recommend using within 6 weeks of freezing.

*Did you know?

Cinnamon has a variety of vitamins and minerals in it, and is chock full of antioxidants! There’s even some evidence that it may have anti-inflammatory effects in the body. Be careful with too much cinnamon, though! Not only will your dog be turned off by the flavor, but many sources of ground cinnamon can be high in lead.
