Acupuncture: Small Needles, Big Results

Acupuncture - an ancient art that science is starting to understand.

Though small (about the thickness of a human hair), acupuncture needles are an effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions. Acupuncture relieves pain, manages stress and anxiety, reduces inflammation, and improves vitality. One of the most exciting ways for me to use acupuncture is to help restore neurological function in pets suffering from injuries or degenerative conditions.

During an acupuncture session, needles are inserted into specific points on the body. The needles stay in place anywhere from 10-25 minutes, yet results can last hours to days, and even weeks.

Most of my patients tolerate acupuncture surprisingly well, especially as trust is built between the patient and the practitioner. Most grow to associate acupuncture treatments with feeling better, and cats especially have been known to surprise myself and their owners with their uncharacteristic cooperation.

Laser Therapy: Healing rays of light

Laser’s ability to effectively relieve pain and reduce inflammation are widely recognized. At our most basic level of understanding, laser therapy uses pulses of concentrated light energy to induce chemical changes to tissues that speed healing.

I choose my medicine based on results, with a heavy emphasis on scientific evidence. Exciting new research continues to highlight the potential benefits of laser therapy at the cellular level:

  • Induces ATP production (ATP is necessary for cell function and healing)

  • Promotes protein synthesis

  • Promotes cell migration and proliferation (an important component of tissue healing)

  • Promotes anti-inflammatory signaling between cells

  • Increases production of antioxidant enzymes

Laser is quickly becoming a gold standard treatment for a wide range of human and animal conditions. Applications range from orthopedic problems like arthritis, all the way up to superficial skin problems such as burns and infections.

Laser FAQs

  • Lasers differ in the wavelengths of light that they emit, the amount of power (light energy) that they deliver, the class that they fall into, whether they emit a continuous light beam or if the light is pulsed, and other variables. We use a Class 4 laser that benefits from Cutting Edge Laser Technologies Multiwave Locked System® (MLS) that delivers therapeutic wavelengths safely and efficiently.

  • Class 1 to class 3 lasers (AKA Cold lasers, or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) devices) emit lower power levels and do not heat the tissues in general. The lower the class of laser, the lower the potential for damage to tissues. Low-level laser therapies are also much more widely available to consumers over the counter (chances are you’ve seen these devices directly marketed to you), and less expensive. The downside of lower powered lasers is that they take longer to deliver therapeutic doses of light energy, which is not as useful in a clinic setting.

Though our class 4 laser is high-powered, the risks are mitigated by the way that light is delivered to the treatment area, the light is emitted in two main ways

Some light is continually emitted steadily and without interruption during operation. This can generate a safe level of heat which can promote tissue relaxation and increased blood flow.

Some light emissions are chopped (AKA gated or pulsed), which means that they are rapidly turned on and off and observed as pulses of light. Chopped emissions mitigate the heat generated by concentrated light energy and have utility when deep tissue penetration is needed.

In the words of Cutting Edge:

“MLS sources have a peak power of 75 W and an average power of up to 1.2 W delivered with the synchronization of emissions (continuous/chopped and pulsed), which enables the user to reach desired tissue depth, while ensuring complete safety against collateral tissue (heat) damage.

Thanks to the higher peak power, one may act on the source of pain more directly by increasing the anti-inflammatory effects, speeding up the anti-edema effects and promoting activation of cellular regeneration processes.”

  • Wavelength is the distance between consecutive peaks of the laser light wave, typically measured in nanometers (nm). Different wavelengths penetrate tissues to varying depths and are absorbed differently depending on tissue type.

Our laser uses the wavelengths of “808nm (anti-edemic and anti-inflammatory) and 905nm (analgesic). An energetic synergy is created when delivering these wavelengths that produces greater anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects than either can produce on its own…” (Cutting Edge)

  • Duration and frequency need to be optimized based on the specific clinical scenario to maximize benefits and minimize side effects.

  • Safety is paramount, and that’s why we require specific eye protection for both the patient and operator that filters out the laser’s wavelengths.

  • First: Laser therapy is supported by empirical evidence:

    • Evidence-Based Support: There is a growing body of research and clinical trials supporting the efficacy of therapeutic lasers. Numerous systematic reviews and meta-analyses in peer-reviewed medical journals have demonstrated positive outcomes, particularly in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, wound healing, and pain management.

    • Precision and Control: Modern therapeutic lasers allow for precise control over intensity, pulsation, and wavelength, which can be tailored to individual patient needs, increasing the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.

Second: Laser therapy also allows for One Health and Interdisciplinary Collaboration:

    • Complementary Therapy: Therapeutic lasers can be integrated into broader treatment plans alongside physical therapy, occupational therapy, and pharmacological interventions, providing a holistic approach to patient care. This integration supports the One Health initiative, which emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration for optimal health outcomes.

    • Enhancing Rehabilitation Outcomes: Collaboration with rehabilitation professionals can be enhanced through the use of laser therapy as it often speeds up the recovery process, allowing for quicker progression through rehabilitation protocols and potentially shorter recovery times. This can lead to more efficient use of healthcare resources and better patient outcomes.

Some pets benefit from being allowed to get used to the sound of Laser therapy before treatment. We recommend starting at a low volume, and giving your pet rewards to associate the sounds with good things. Ask us about other ways to help desensitize your pets - we’re here to help!

ESTIM: Acupuncture + Electrical Current

What does an electric guitar have in common with ESTIM treatment?

  • Acoustic guitars create beautiful melodies, but the addition of electricity allows the musician to amplify their tune so it may be heard in much larger venues. The electronics linked to the guitar also modulate the quality, depth, and character of sound.

  • E-stim is a catch-all term that refers to the application of an electrical current to tissues to achieve desired outcomes. Electroacupuncture delivers current by attaching the leads directly to the acupuncture needles. And much like the guitar above, E-stim amplifies and modulates the pain-relief signals.

  • In patients who do not tolerate acupuncture, many of the same benefits can be seen by placing pads on the pet’s skin, a treatment called Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or TENS. E-stim is used to treat pain, swelling, muscle spasms and neurological dysfunction. It has also been shown to induce the release of the body’s own pain-relieving hormones, like opioids and endorphins.

PEMF: High-tech pain relief for cats and dogs

PEMF therapy has been shown to increase blood supply and oxygen delivery, improve cell function, and decrease pain and inflammation.

I perform many treatments on a PEMF bed where beneficial electromagnetic energy is delivered to their bodies without them even knowing it. Specialized loops can also be used around the site of a specific injury (such as around an arthritic and painful knee) to focus this electromagnetic energy at the source of your pet’s discomfort.

Did you know that, just like our planet Earth, every cell in your pet’s body has its very own magnetic field? When cells are damaged, injured, or diseased, the magnetic field of that cell is affected. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy uses energy to stimulate the body’s cells and help return their magnetic field to normal.

Massage and Manual Therapies

Therapeutic Massage

Pets benefit from massage in a variety of ways. Massage can be used to ease pain and discomfort, to promote blood flow, and to establish trusting relationship based on sensory feedback that feels good.

Physical Rehabilitation Manual Therapies

As a veterinary rehabilitation practitioner, my hands are my most valuable diagnostic and therapeutic tool.

Manual therapies are treatments that are applied to the pet directly by hand. It wasn’t until I received specialized training in veterinary rehabilitation that I developed a unique appreciation for just how important these therapies are in relieving pain and allowing better mobility! I use several of these manual techniques in every single therapeutic session with my patients:

  1. Massage relieves sore muscles and reduce swelling after an injury

  2. Trigger point release eases muscle tension and helps restore the blood supply to the affected muscle fibers. Trigger points are painful spots in muscles where blood supply has been closed off

  3. Joint mobilizations and joint compressions soothe swollen and painful joints and can help improve range of motion

  4. Spinal traction maneuvers improve nerve conduction and alleviate pain in patients with spinal conditions

Shock Wave: Healing Sound Waves

In general, what can be treated with Shock Wave?

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Chronic Pain

  • Sprains and strains (tendon and ligament injuries)

  • Bone fractures

  • Back pain (not acute IVDD)

  • Shoulder Instability

Relieve Pain, Reduce Lameness, Increase Mobility

We are excited to announce that we are now offering Shock Wave* treatment in our practice. Shock Wave uses high energy sound waves to relieve pain, reduce lameness, and increase mobility. Benefits of Shock Wave are similar to laser treatment, but sound waves penetrate tissue deeper than laser light, the results of treatment last longer, and are faster acting than laser. The sound waves stimulate cells to release healing growth factors in the body that reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, accelerate bone formation and enhance tendon, ligament, and wound healing.

Our PulseVet System is electrohydraulic, which unlike piezoelectric systems, does not require us to sedate patients (though some may benefit from mild oral sedatives if they have noise phobias) and allows us to treat a larger area, to a deeper tissue depth, in the same amount of time.

*Shock Wave is not an electric shock! It is sound energy.

Shock Wave FAQ

  • We chose the Our PulseVet System (made by Zomedica) because it uses electrohydraulic technology, which unlike other less expensive piezoelectric systems:

    1. Does not require us to sedate all patients.

    2. Allows us to treat a larger area to a deeper tissue depth, in the same amount of time.

  • For more information, please read HB: INSERT LINK

  • We perform Shock Wave in our Pet Gym, and create a safe, comfortable environment for your pet where they are always allowed to opt out of treatment, should they need a break. Owners generally play an active part in calming and distracting their pet, and additional staff may also be needed to aid these efforts using positive reinforcement techniques.

  • We can use prescribed drugs to our benefit to help take the edge off by calming the nervous system. Additionally we can advise on strategies to get pets used to treatment a few days prior to appointments so that they are more acclimated to the sensations associated with Shock Wave. Lastly, the humans in the room all focus on projecting a calm state of mind, so that the cues we give to pets let them know it’s going to be OK!

    • Please see the Shock Wave Appointments page for current prices.

We invested in a Shock Wave unit that, unlike other units, doesn’t require sedation making it a safer treatment option for senior and geriatric patients. With each use, the trode (functional part of the device) is consumed and only has a limited number of uses before it must be “reloaded”.

  • Most pet insurance companies will reimburse the cost of Shock Wave treatment, but as always, we recommend checking with your company directly if you have questions about the coverage in your pet's policy. We generally recommend scheduling shockwave appointments by themselves, without planning any other treatment modalities that day.

  • Not every tool is useful in every single circumstance, and our Veterinary staff will make recommendations for your pet based on the capabilities and limitations of Laser, shockwave, and any other modalities we utilize or recommend. Laser has its indications, for sure. It is often better tolerated than Shock Wave, it is great for more superficial conditions and acute IVDD, and it can be used in multiple locations in the body at one time. Laser is often used in conjunction with Shock Wave when

  • For most conditions, three (3) treatments are scheduled about 2-3 weeks apart. This treatment frequency allows for a big boost in healing and tissue comfort. In conditions in which we are aiming for complete healing and resolution of the problem, such as with tendonitis cases, this series of 3 treatments is very rarely repeated. In chronic conditions such as joint arthritis or chronic back pain (NOT acute IVDD), one series of 3 treatments usually provides relief to the patient for 9-12 months.

  • The unit produces a loud clicking sound that is not loud enough to require hearing protection, but may be alarming to dogs and some people. If you are concerned about the sound, we have an audio file you can sample to evaluate or desensitize them to the sound beforehand.

  • Treatments generally take less than 10 minutes, and require 2-3 treatments, performed 2-3 weeks apart. Though you may see immediate improvement, it is important to keep exercise and high impact activity to a minimum to allow the body to heal (please keep this in mind for ALL of our treatments). Shockwave treatment is offered during any of our normal operating hours, and is best suited as a separate appointment from standard and extended (“The Works”) acupuncture, rehabilitation and laser appointments.

Some pets benefit from being allowed to get used to the sound of Shock Wave therapy before treatment. We recommend starting at a low volume, and giving your pet rewards to associate the sounds with good things. Ask us about other ways to help desensitize your pets - we’re here to help!
